Photos; Farmers Bite The Tails Of Cows During Indonesian Festival. See Why

This Indonesian tradition sees fearless competitors dragged through a muddy field while clinging on to the tails of two charging cows. The bizarre competition is called Pacu Jawi and has marked the end of the rice season in West Sumatra for more than 400 years.

The cows are fitted with a thin wooden frame which the jockeys then balance on from behind.

The riders can often find themselves stretched to the extreme as the animals pull them apart in different directions. With their hands occupied, they encourage their cows to go faster by biting their tails.

The dramatic race allows farmers to show off their cattle to potential buyers with winners expecting to sell their animals for double the money.

But, of course, the race is not without its dangers and at one point two of the runaway cows ran straight into the crowd.
